Job Description

Company Background: OTS R&D, Inc. provides research and development in thermal systems, primarily for the HVAC and Refrigeration industries. The bulk of our team is made up of mechanical engineers with a focus in thermal science.

Position Summary : We are in need of a full-time summer intern to help with specific tasks associated with our modeling activities, which will include research and evaluation of physics-informed neural networks (PINN). Responsibilities include developing and advising representative models for compressors, validating models using laboratory data, researching PINN methods and applications, coding script for data analysis, and summarizing observations in written summary. This is a paid, temporary 8 – 10 week , in-person internship in Beltsville, Maryland. Work will be conducted in partnership with our full-time engineering team.

The ideal candidate for our organization is professional, detail oriented, innovative and open-minded with relevant experience or knowledge of PINNs. The candidate must be comfortable working with Python, analyzing complex data, drafting meaningful reports, and communicating clearly with team members.

Position Responsibilities :

• Completing direct technical activities to support research and development of PINNs for targeted projects.
• Develop and assess representative models for HVAC compressors.
• Analyze complex data sets including modeling and laboratory experimental outputs.
• Communicate internally with team peers.
• Develop written reports to summarize project activities and share key findings.
• Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications :

• Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, thermal science or similar; currently pursuing a master's degree preferred
• Relevant research or work experience exploring and/or applying PINNs
• Relevant research or work experience with machine learning
• Experience with HVAC&R systems and compressors is extremely beneficial
• Familiarity with engineering programming, including Python
• Ability to communicate clearly and easily with internal team members
• Ability to manage individual tasks as well as project deliverables and milestones
• Excellent technical writing skills

Work Location : In person at our Beltsville, MD location.

Pay : $25/hour. This is a temporary position for 8 – 10 weeks during June – August 2025. Exact dates are flexible.

Schedule:

• Monday to Friday, generally 9am – 5pm with flex hours
